The World Maritime Day Parallel Event is the most important maritime event of the United Nations. The event will be held for the first time in the country located in the Central and Eastern Europe and by the Baltic Sea. The World Maritime Day Parallel Event was first organized in 2005 in Portugal. In 2017, Panama was the host to the World Maritime Day Parallel Event, while in 2019 the event will be organized by Colombia. In the past the event was held, inter alia, in USA (2009), Italy (2011) and Japan (2015).

The World Maritime Day Parallel Event 2018 in Szczecin will be part of the celebration of the establishment of the IMO and of the 100th anniversary of Poland's independence. The event will cover not only the official proceedings and a conference devoted to maritime issues, but also a number of accompanying cultural, sports and recreational events addressed to domestic and foreign guests and residents of Szczecin. The leading themes of the World Maritime Day Parallel Event 2018 in Szczecin are: Green and smart shipping, Big data and cyber security in shipping, Shipping in the face of new transport routes and The future of maritime labour market.

The International Maritime Organization is a specialised organisation of the United Nations system, which deals with maritime affairs, maritime safety, international shipping and the prevention of marine environment pollution. In 2018, we also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the IMO. The theme for the year – "IMO 70: Our Heritage - Better Shipping for a Better Future" – provides an opportunity to take stock and look back, but also to look forward, addressing the current and future challenges for maritime transport to maintain a continued and strengthened contribution towards sustainable growth for all.
